ILLEGAL BETTING.
Sir, —This town is quite used to hearing of raids for illicit liquor, and the police show commendable activity. As it is just as illegal to sell bets as it is to sell liquor without a license, when are we going to hear of a raid or two on illicit betting? There are betting facilities here in abundance, just as there are in nearly every other town in New Zealand, and it is remarkable that there is so little interference. The bookies wax fat throughout the land, and they take care to protect themselves with all sorts of restrictions. They pay no license fees, and there is no sales tax on the bets they sell, and a goodly proportion of their “sales” is profit. They deserve no support or consideration. j I , LUX..
