CROWN PROPERTY
THE RATING QUESTION.
(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October '2l. A protest against the action of the State in refusing to pay rates on properties which fell into the hands of State lending departments was made by the Christchurch 'City Council tonight. The motion before the meeting, forwarded by the 'Timaru Borough Council, was that the Mortgage Corporation and other State lending departments should be placed on tn© same basis as every other private lender of money in their liability for rates. It was stated in the discussion that many of the properties which had passed into the hands of the State as mortgagee were now let at full rentals sufficient to pay interest, capital charges and rates, but the Government refused to pay any fates. A councillor said that it had been practically promised when the Mortgage Corporation was formed that it would not be regarded as a Government department, and that it would not claim exemption from rates. It was agreed unanimously to support the resolution of the Timaru Borough Council.
