DENIAL OF OFFENCE

THEFT OF 20 COWS ALLEGED. (Per Press Association). i WELLINGTON, October 21. Twenty cows, which were missed at Greytown from a herd of 100 owned by Mr Quentin Donald, were alleged, in the Supreme Court to-day, to have been stolen by Harry Leo Biggar, aged 32, a labourer, drover and dealer. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft and not guilty to a charge of receiving cattle knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. „

According to the charge, the 20 cows wore valued at £IOO. The prosecution said the cows were all heavily in calf and when a muster was taken it was found that 20 were missing. A few days before Biggar had sent 20 cows to the Gear Meat Company as boners.

Evidence was given that the hides at the works were inspected by Donald, and the 20 identified. For the defence, it was claimed that none of the hides was identifiable as belonging to Donald. The case is proceeding.
