STRIKE VIOLENCE
SUGAR WORKERS IN GUIANA.
DEMAND FOR HIGHER. WAGES
(United Press Association—Copyright) GEORGETOWN (British Guiana),
October 17
Martial law has been proclaimed in the city and district, as thousands of sugar estate- labourers are striking for higher wages, and have threatened violence. The overseer of one of the plantations was beaten on Wednesday night, and the labourers set fire to a canefield.
The strikers are still threatening, but the Government believes that a show of force has eased the situation. There is little likelihood of mass violence, as assemblies of strikers have been forbidden.
