NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

FINAL IN AMATEUR CONTEST

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At the end of the first nine holes in

the final of the New Zealand amateur » golf championship at Shirley this morning, Hornabrook was leading from Silk (holder), 1 up. Hornabrook was out in 34, including an eagle 3 at Farthest North (424 yards). The weather was overcast, and there was a small gallery. The finaT is being played over 36 holes, the second round taking place this afternoon. At the end of the first 18 holes Hornabrook was 1 up. He was round in 71, and Silk in 73. Silk won the toss, and hit a beautiful drive down the fairway l . Hornabrook hit a screamer which ended in the rough, well down the faixway and to the left. Bdth were on with easy seconds and Silk holed a 25-footer ;for a win. with a bii'die. It was a sensational beginning. Both men were playing carefully, it being particularly noticeable that Silk was avoiding forcing his tee shots. At Briggs (337 yards)' Hornabrook was through with his'second, but recovered perfectly with a. run-up the approach from under a tree and the hole was halved in four. Silk narrowly escaped being bunkered at Muggeredg’e (164 yards), his ball stopping on the edge. He was short with his second and laid Hornabrook a stymie. Hornabrook putted to the left and won in three to four, Silk just

missing his putt. The match was square again. Hornabrook was to the right with his drive at Land’s End (491 yards) and played a grand iron, skimming the corner. Silk was short with his approach and Hornabrook overran his. The hole was halved in fives.

Silk’s hook, took charge at Farthest North (474 yards) and his drive ended well out on the tenth fairway. Hornabrook was down the fairway and his second was well on the green. Silk was through with his third. Hornabrook holed a 60-footer for an eagle 3 and win to be one up. It was a perfect putt. Silk holed a five-footer for a half in four at Mairehau (4664 yards), after Hornabrook had just failed to hole a 10-foot putt for 3. Hornabrook was now playjng with confidence* hitting his irons and woods with equal facility. Silk holed out from the rough at the back of the green at Nor’xveSt (327 yards) for a birdie three. Hornabrook holed an eight-footer for another birdie and a half.

Hornabrook chipped back into the fairv ay from the rough to the. left at Terra Nova (427 yards) and Silk mishit liis second into the sandtrap on the light of the gfeen. Roth were through with their approaches and Silk missed a yard putt. He overran the hole and almost laid a stymie. Hornabrook won on five to six, and was two up. Both tee shots finished about seven feet from the pin at the Crossways (152 yards). Silk putted -first and was down in birdie 2. Hornabrook missed his putt and had one up at the turn. Silk was out in 36 and Hornabrook in 34.

Hornabrook was on the edge of the green in two at O’Rorke’s (374 yards), and the hole was halved in fours.

Silk’s drive ended 12 yards short of the left-hand bunker, which guards the green at The Pines (315 yards). He was just in the rough. His second was eight feet from the pin and Hornabrook 15 feet away. A half in four followed.

Silk hooked another tee shot at Old Nick (128 yards) and was bunkered. Hornabrook was. well on. Silk played a daring run up approach, then lipped tiie hole from three feet and had another loss, to be three down. Hornabrook’s putt for two stopped four inches short. It was Hornabrook’s turn to make a mistake at Shirley (432 yards). Hte threw himself at the ball with a Wooden club and duffed the shot. It ended in the rough short of the creek and to the left. He recovered well to be 18 feet from the pin for three. Silk was pin high to the left for two after being in the tough, and won with birdie four. Hornabrook was now two up. Silk’s ball finished in thick grass just short of the left-hand bunker at Farthest South (180 yards). Hornabrook was pin liigh and four feet off the green to the left. Hornabrook missed a four-foot putt for three and lost the hole, Silk being down in three. Going to the sixteenth tee Hornabrook was one up.

In the final of the New Zealand Plate, C. J. Ward beat J. P, Mortland, 4up and 3. Ward was out in 37, and did the 15 holes in 57. Mortland was out in 42, with a total of 65 for the 15 holes.

WOMEN’S FOURSOMES MATCH.

BRITAIN PLAYS NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON, This Day. The weather was fine but with a breeze at Miramar for the the British women’s golf team against a New Zealand women’s team. This morning’s results Mrs Walker and Miss Anderson (Britain) beat Mrs Fullerton Smith and Miss Kay, 2 and 1. Mrs Greenlees and Miss Wade (Britain) and Miss Horwell and Miss Fleming, all square.
