MINE STRIKE
GENERAL STOPPAGE AVERTED.
NEGOTIATIONS IN PROGRESS
United Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, October .18.
It was announced late last night at Cardiff that the threatened general stoppage of work in the South V aios coalfields had been averted. Ibis decision is the result of the acceptance by the conference of miners’. delegates of the recommendation by the executive council of.the South Wales Mineis Federation, which had been in consultation with the owners. In these discussions it was announced that the owners of the Nine Mile Point Colliery, where the “stayin” strike began as a protest agair.st the employment of non-unionist men during the recent dispute, intended to close down their pits. Officials of the Federation have been assured that it representations were made later about the reopening of the pits the company would meet the Federation representatives for that purpose. The executive council thereupon advised the conference to accept this assurance, and it recommends that the workmen now on strike at other colieries should resume work. Local representatives of the Federation got into communication with the men who were refusing to leave the pits, and by this morning most of them had been withdrawn. . The Minister for Mines (Mr Ernest Brown) received a reputation from the Federation, and was also m touch with the colliery company m regard to the dispute. He intimated thatho services of. the Mines Department were available for mediation. The present dispute has no connection with the negotiations at present being held about the claim of the Miners’ Federation of Britain for a flat increase in wages of 2s a day.—-British Official Wireless.
