TENSE SITUATION
ITALIAN FEELING TOWARD BRITAIN ASSURANCES TO MUSSOLINI OBLIGATIONS UNDER THE LEAGUE MISCHIEVOUS MISCONCEPTIONS (United Press Association—Copyright) . (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. The “Sun-Herald” says that a tense situation exists to-night between England and Italy. Apparently the fierce hostility against Britain in the majority of the Continental newspapers has stirred Signor Mussolini, necessitating further British assurances, through the Ambassador at Rome, as being vital for removing “mischievous miscPnceptions.” The representations to Signor Mussolini again emphasise that Britain's policy is not against Italy, and that she does not contemplate closing the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, military sanctions, or a blockade, but is actuated entirely by Britain’s conception of her own obligations under the League, and, finally that the naval measures in the Mediterranean are purely precautionary and in no sense directed against Italy.
