FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 18, 1885.) Big Cricket Next- Wednesday will be one- of the big days in the calendar of the Ashburton Cricket Club. The popular Christchurch Club, Lancaster park, under the captaincy of Mr Wilding, will pay a visit to the “huh” and tvv : conclusions with out local Knights of* the Willow. The matches with tins club in previous years have generally been “good things,” very pleasant and enjoyable. This season the annual struggle comes in somewhat early for our players, who have hardly yet settled down to play, but the match committee are determined to cto their best There is still $ .Week for practice and wickets will be prepared, every evening of which it is to be hoped our players will take advantage and do their best to loosen their joints and get their eyes in. People who possess milking cattle are finding the milk diminishing, and are turning their cattle on to the public roads to gather what fresh and green grass they can find during the watches of the night. At Saturday’s meeting of the Longbeach Road Board, the ranger reported that he. had taken possession of twelve separate lots of these bovine wanderers, and their owners had been reminded that the “long paddock” was a dear field.
