UNEMPLOYED WAGES

ASHBURTON WORKERS’ DEMAND

INCREASED PAYMENTS REFUSED.

A resolution demanding that the Unemployment Board place all unemployed men in Ashburton on sustenance, the payments to be increased by 8s a week for single men, and by 7s a week for married men, and, further, that country rates be brought up to the same level as those paid in the cities, was carried at a recent largelyattended meeting of relief workers in Ashburton.

For the Commissioner of Unemployment, the Ashburton Certifying Officer (Mr W. J. Minogue) has replied that it was regretted that the request could not be granted. It should not be overlooked, said the Commissioner, that several major public works had been arranged Canterbury, and they would provide full-time employment at standard rates of wages. When, proposals had been made and the Public Works or other State departments were in a position to proceed with the works, the men on the Ashburton register would be given an opportunity of accepting the full-time employment offering.
