FRUIT AND PRODUCE.

THE ASHBURTON MARKET. There has not been a great deal of business passing on the Ashburton fruit and produce market this week. No new lines have come forward, and values of only commodities have shown any change. Stunner apples are more expensive, and rhubarb has eased in price. Values are as follow: Potatoes—2ss a sack, early seed l£d and 2d a lb. Bacon—9d to lOd a lb. Wheat—Seconds, 12s to 13s a sack. Honey—7d to 7id a lb. Onions—3d to 4d a lb.

Cabbages—3d and 4d each. Apples—Stunners 6si 6d to 7s 6d, Tasmas 6s 6d to 7s, Ryrners 5s 6d to 6s, Delicious 7s 6d to 8s 6d. Marrows—3s to 4s a dozen. Chaff —2s 3d and 2s 6d a sack. Walnuts —5d and 6d a lb. Carrots —2s 6d to 3s a sugar bag. Celery—3d a bundle. Swedes —Is 6d and) 2s a sugar bag. Parsnips—ss a sugar bag. Leeks—3d a bundle. Cauliflowers—3s, 4s and 5s a dozen, Pie Melons—6d to 9d. Esehallots—l£d to 2d a lb. Lettuce —2d to 3d each. Rhubarb—7d and 8d a bundle.

PIGS AND POULTRY.

THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Prices ruling at the Ashburton pig and poultry sales yesterday were: — Pigs—Baconers 44s 6d to 49s 6d, stores 16s to 245, weaners and slips 7s 6d to 14s.

Poultry—Hens 2s Id to 3s 7d, roosters Is 6d to 4s 7d, geese (each) 2s to 2s 6d.

GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

THE DUNEDIN MARKETS. DUNEDIN, October 4. n Some millers have not yet completed, their purchases of wheat for the season, and they are readily taking up any lots on offer. The demand for seed wheat lias fallen off, as most growers have sown early. In some districts, such as the Taieri, there is still a fair quantity of wheat to be planted. The fowl wheat market is quiet, with buyers purchasing from hand to mouth. The value of fowl wheat in Dunedin is 4s 9d a bushel, sacks, extra, ex truck, and for deliveries ex store up to 5s is obtainable. The oat market shows no change. Stocks are still very short and merchants are finding it difficult to supply seed requirements. The quality of the oats offering for seed is not so good as in previous years, but there is a continued demand from the country where there - are now no stocks held. There are no shipping inquiries from The potato market shows signs of quietening down. It is difficult to quote the value of potatoes at present. Nominal quotations . may, however,! (be given as £ls a ton.. Apart fiom retail business, there is very little doing in any variety of seed. Practically all Cliewings fescue has now been exported, but odd lots are still saleable overseas. Browntop is also meeting with a fair export demand but other seeds are neglected. The markets do not show any change, as the dry weather is causing holders to await developments and (keep their stocks, ith a continuation of biie present dry period, it will not he advisable for farmers to mark off any areas for seed-saving purposes, and this position is making holders disinclined to sell at current values. There is not a great supply of cocksfoot obtainable, and the amount of seed 1 to bo saved next year must be diminished.

FROZEN MEAT MARKETS. The Bank of Australasia has received the following cablegram, dated October 2, from London:— Frozen lambs, seasonal falling off in demand, but as there are only limited supplies in store and! afloat, prices have

advanced for both prime quality and secondary New Zealand; there are also many inquiries for Australian lambs at better prices. Frozen Mutton,—New Zealand wethers fair demand, prices steady, ewes and Australian mutton, however, rather difficult to sell 1 . Frozen beef market dull, only moderate business having been done at slightly lower places.

MELBOURNE WOOL SALES. PRICES FIRM AT HIGH LEVEL. MELBOURNE, October 4. At the wool sales yesterday values remained at the best point of the week.

FREIGHT RATES INCREASED.

RIVER PLATE TO BRITAIN. LONDON, October 3.
