POSITION OF THE EMPIRE.
NOT LIKELY TO BE* INVOLVED.
SANCTIONS NOT ACT OF WAR.
ASSURANCE BY MUSSOLINI
(Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, October 3.
Immediately commencement of war was reported a representative of the “Sun-Herald” Service sought an authoritative British opinion as to how the Empire was likely to be affected and to what extent the Dominions might be involved.
The reply in effect was that neither Australia nor the other Dominions need be anxious, as it was most unlikely that England! and the Dominions would be involved in war. Members of the Cabinet are satisfied that England and the Dominions showed at Geneva their solidarity for collective security and that they will take part in economic sanctions against Italy. Signor Mussolini having stated categorically that he will not regard such measures as constituting war, clearly Britain will accept Mussolini’s assurance.
GREECE IMPOSES BOYCOTT.
ATHENS, October 3
Greek shipowners have instructed the captains of ships not to accept cargoes either to, or from Italy. Ships are not to enter the Suez Canal hut to proceed via the Cape if in the East.
