ITALIANS OPEN THE OFFENSIVE 4 , * 1 ' 1 . . ■ ' 1 ' - SEVENTEEN HUNDRED CASUALTIES REPORTED FIRST BOMBS FALL ON HOSPITAL, KILLING NURSES (United Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 3. A British United Press representative with the Italian forces at Eritrea says that hostilities are reported to have commenced with the Italian bombardment of Adowa. After all-night activity troops crossed the frontier, preceded by skirmishing parties armed with machine-guns, at widelyseparated points, converging on Adowa. Ten thousand troops are advancing toward the frontier. Crowds cheered their departure from Italian headquarters. As the Mara church bells rang all night searchlights swept the sky continuously. General Bono moved his headquarters and general staff nearer the front. A squadron of bombers and fighters took off at dawn for Adowa, including Cianos’ “Desperate Squadron.” Mussolini’s two sons are among the pilots.
