ACTIVITIES IN ASHBURTON. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in Baring Square Church parlour yesterday afternoon, when, in the absence of the president, the chair was occupied by Mrs W. H. Robinson (district president), who conducted! the devotional exercises, prayer being offered, by Sister Mildred. Mrs Robinson referred to the recent visit of Mrs Moffat Clow, which had been greatly appreciated by many in Ashburton, and to the six new members enrolled by the .visitor. An invitation to be present at a women’s meeting in the Salvation Army Hall on Monday, when Mrs Commissioner Adams, Wellington, will be the speaker, was received. Similar invitations from the Rakaia W.C.T.U. to a special meeting to be held on October 10, to be addressed by Miss C. Henderson, 8.A., New Zealand corresponding secretary, and to the spring show to be held in the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association s rooms on October 17, wore accepted. A communication was received from the National Peace Council of New Zealand in connection with the- ItaloAbyssinian crisis, and the appeal made to the Prime Minister drawing attention to the suggestions made, and expressing the hope that they will receive the sympathetic attention of the Government.

After discussion it was decided to support the'representations made and to write to headquarters. Four members were appointed to take charge of the W.C.T.U. Rest Tent at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show on November 7.

Arrangements for “Maori Day,” oil November 5, were left in the hands of the superintendent (Mrs G. Holmes). Contributions of new or cast-off clothing were solicited, and to be handed in on that date.

Tea was served, and comprehensive reports of the convention held on September 17 and 18 were submitted by Mrs S. J. Buckler and Miss E. Trevurza. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Baring Square Church trustees for use of buildings, to those who had granted hospitality to visiting delegates, the Press, and to all who had contributed to* the success of the convention.

Greetings were received from members at Waipukurau and! Dargaville, and conveying good wishes for the coming poll.
