Alfllss F. R. Williams, of Hawera, will arrive in Ashburton at an early date to replace Aliss E. Eagle, as one of the supervisors at the Aslibuton telephone exchange.

Air Winton Keay (editor of the “Raglan County Chi’onicle”) lias been'advised that his mystery novel, entitled “The Jury Room Alurder,” has been accepted by a leading firm of British publishers. The publishers stated that their reader considered the book of considerable merit, and expected that it would be produced early in November of this year.

The Rev. C. S. Alatthews, who for some years was in charge of the Ashburton Baptist C-hurcb, has accepted a call to the pastorate of the Silver Road Baptist Church, Norwich. This church is a fairly large city cause, built about 20 years age, lit a cost of £20,000, and has a. large Sunday School, with modern equipment. Mr Alatthews commences his ministry there next Sunday.

Air T. A. Barrow (assistant accountant and inspector of the Education Department) has been appointed accountant of the Public Works Department. Air Barrow was educated at the Greymouth District High School, and joined the State Fire Insurance Office in 1913, being transferred to the Education Department in 1914. He was promoted to the position of assistant accountant and inspector in 1927.

Notice of his desire to retire on superannuation at the close of whatever leave of absence might he granted to him after December 31, was given by the superintendent and secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr* H. B. Burnett), at a meeting of the Board yesterday. On December 31 Mr Burnett will have completed 25 years’ service with, the board, first as secretary and then as secretary and treasurer, and later as superintendent and secretary.

At the meeting of the committee of the Ashburton Motor-cycle Club, on the motion of the chairman (Mr J. R. Leask), members stood in silence out of respect to. the memory of the late Mr Jack Johansen. In his remarks the chairman stated that Mr Johansen, who joined the club at its inauguration in 1915, had since that time been a keen supporter and a regular attender at the club’s various activities, both social and sporting. In the passing of Mr Johansen the club had lost “the father” of its competitors, Mr Johansen having taken an active part in club events up to the end of last season.
