HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING.

BOTH SIDES LOSE HEAVILY.

An ambush of troops, with heavy casualties, is reported from the NorthWest -Frontier of India. A few weeks ago a force of British and Indian troops occupied a position in the Mohmand area during the negotiations with the tribesmen following the disturbances in that region. Early yesterday a company that was engaged on a reconnaissance movement westward from Nahakki was attacked by greatly superior numbers of tribesman, who had been in close concealment.

Hand-to-hand fighting took place and there were heavy casualties on both sides. One British officer was killed and two are missing, one believed to be killed. Two Indian officers are also missing.
