IMMINENCE OF HOSTILITIES.
EXPECTATION IN EUROPE.
SEEKING TO LIMIT ARENA. LONDON, September 30. Only a few optimists retain hopes of a peaceful settlement of the dispute between Italy and Ethiopia, and Europe generally is estimating the number of days before the clash comes — the majority of the newspapers expect it in about 10 days. Statesmen have proceeded to the next stage, calculating the effect of sanctions and the possibilities of limiting the conflict to Africa. The British Labour and Conservative parties, at their annual conferences this week, are expected to reveal seriously divided views on the extent to which Britain should allow herself to become involved.
A discussion by the Cabinet on Wednesday and a speech by Mr Baldwin on Friday are likely to furnish a further
elaboration of the British attitude. In the meantime, France generally welcomes Sir jSamuel Hoare’% affirmation of collective action, though she chafes under the avoidance of specific undertakings and future eventualities.
