ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.

MAN AND WOMAN ACCUSED.

(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, Sept. 30,

The publication of the details of the evidence at the Magistrate’s Couit this morning in a series of charges against Paul Edward Din, or Dean, 2d years of age, and Madeline Elizabeth Din, or Dean, 44 years, was to a great extent suppressed, when, on the application of the police, the presiding justices ordered the non-publication of the names of bank depositors, their addresses, and occupations, the details of accounts, and also the details of the methods of the working of the Post Office Savings Bank. The male accused was charged that by false pretences he obtained on April 1, 1935, £1800; on July 12, £9OO, and on August 1, £IBSO, from the Auckland branch of the Post Office Savings Bank. He was also indicted on three charges of forgery. The female accused was joined with the other accused in respect to the charge of obtaining £IBSO. Three depositors at the bank denied signing the signatures on the withdrawal slips produced. Two handwriting experts expressed the opinion that the slips had been filled in and signed by the male accused. James Brown, assistant-supervisor, said that the male accused had been employed at the bank from January to July 15 last, when he resigned. Frederick Charles Wooler, principal of F. C. Wooler, Ltd., wholesale merchants, of Christchurch, said that a few days before May 20, the accused visited his office, seeking advice about an investment he proposed to make, ft was suggested to witness by the accused’s sister, who accompanied him, that he should sell some of the shares in his business; and next day he offered to sell the accused 1200 £1 fully paid shares. The accused agreed Payment was made by the accused in cash—£looo on May 20, and £2OO on May 21. Evidence was next taken of several clerks employed in the Post Office Savings Bank. Edgar F. Allen said that on August 1, lie saw the accused at a writing desk in the public lobby of the savings bank. When he was employed by the department, the accused was clean shaven; but this day he had a heavy moustache.

A letter in the Queen Street office of the Bank of New Zealand, Alfred Edward (filbert, said that on August 1, the male accused came to his counter, and presented the Chief Postmaster’s cheque for £IBSO, which was cashed on July 12. A similar cheque for £9OO was paid out, and on April 1 a cheque was cashed for £IBOO.

Several bank officials gave evidence of Mrs Din or the male accused having secured drafts to various amounts to be transferred to Sydney. The hearing was adjourned.
