GROUNDS IN THE DOMAIN.

QUESTION OF EXTENSIONS. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Alayor (Air W. H. Woods), Atessrs E. H. Orr, E. Kerr, W. H. Robinson, J. Thompson, H. R. C. McEilrea, J. T. Pratley, S. Alitchell, J. Shaw, E. Buchanan, F. J. E. Smallbone, and Dr. J. Connor.

The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £422 18s 9d, the chief items being rates £IOO 16s 9d (current) and £lO 6s 9d (arrears), rents £3O 14s, abattoir fees £7O Is 6d) licenses £6l 13s 3d.

Atessrs Smith Brothers, Ltd., and Alessrs Millers, Limited, petitioned tho Council to have channelling put down in front of their properties between Mona Square and East Street. It was stated that arrangements for tho work had already been put in hand. Two tenders for the slaughtering contract at the abattoir were received and were referred to the Abattoir Committee for a report.

Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain B'oard, the Council received 1 the report of tho Curator on work carried out by his staff in the past two weeks. Tho Ashburton Sports Association wrote recommending the granting of the use of the Oval for the Ashburton High School sports this afternoon. The recommendation was adopted. The Ashburton Tennis Club wrote thanking the Board for the manner in which it had. met officials on the lawns recently and for its practical assistance in overcoming the shadow difficulty. The Te Alarae Tennis Club wrote that it had used six courts last year but, owing to the unsatisfactory state of one of the courts and the club’s financial position, the club would like to be permitted to use five courts this season.

The Alayor said that as a sixth court was laid down last year and now the club wished to relinquish it, he was not .sure that the Board was not too easygoing with the clubs. The Board should

insist that the clubs should give sorao guarantee that it could make permanent use of extensions before they were granted. Air Buchanan said that the court had never been fit to play on. The club bad paid so much each year toward the cost of laying down courts. The letter was referred to tile Sports Association.

'The Alayor reported on meetings with officials of the Croquet and Tennis Clubs in the Domain and said that it had been decided to remove certain trees which were causing shadows on the tennis courts. Tho request for an extension of the croquet grounds by 18yds by 24yds, bad been deferred. The club had previously been told that if it required new ground it would have to take it on the top ground. Air Orr pointed out that a recommendation by the committee that no further areas be granted on tlie lower ground had been adopted by the Board some time ago.

After Air Thompson had made an appeal on behalf of the club, the Board decided to notify the club that the Board regretted that it was unable to accede to its request.

Cemetery Beard. Sitting as a. Cemetery Board, the Council received the finance report, which showed that there was a credit balance of £45 13s od. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £l7 ss.
