LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” Sept. 30, 1885). Licensing Committee.—The Mount Somers Licensing Committee met on Monday, all members being present and the Hon. W. S. Peter presiding. The only business was to consider an application for a license for the Alford Forest Hotel. A petition signed by 45 persons against the license being granted, . and a counter-petition containing 40 signatures were presented. The committee considered that a publichouse was .required in the district, and if a license were refused, it was very probable that sly-grog shanties would spring up. The license was granted.

Householders’ Petition.—The Ashburton Borough School Committee has received a letter from the Board of Education enclosing a petition to the Board from householders in the Hampstead and Trevorton districts, and asking the opinion of the committee thereon. The petition, to which 84 signatures were attached, asked that the (Side School at Hampstead l might be declared a District School, the reason given for the request being that many parents had their children attending different schools, the younger ones going to Hampstead, hut those in the higher standards haying to go to the Borough Schools. In consequence of this, it was stated., the younger children had to hang about the Side School till their seniors came from the Ashburton one to take them l home. Nearly all the members of the committee thought the movement premature. After a considerable amount of discussion a motion was carried asking the Board to allow the matter to be de ferred till the annual meeting of house, holders, when an expression of opinion could be obtained.
