ILLEGAL LIQUOR
FINE OF £lO IMPOSED.
A MAGISTRATE ON NO-LICENSE
(Per Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, This Day
For keeping liquor for sale in a nolicense area, Robert Ross was fined £lO.
The police said that men were seen coming out of Ross’s place with bags of liquor. Search of the premises was made and 67 bottles were found in a bedroom and 60 empties" in a washhouse. Ross was living apart from his wife and was unemployed. “The position in Invercargill is somewhat peculiar,” commented the Magistrate (Mr Freeman). “The people voted for Prohibition 30 years ago, but there does not appear to be any prohibition if you want to get a glass of beer. Instead of going to an hotel you have to go to a brewery and get two gallons. That is not Prohibition. It is purely no-license, which is not nolicense at all; but it is the law. It opens to way to this class of offence.”
