COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) RAKAIA. The fortnightly meeting of the Edith Cavell Rebekah Lodge was held in the lodge hall on Monday evening, with Sister C. Rehrnes z P.N.G., presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Sister E. I. Newman in her illness. Sister J. Stevenson, V.G., members, made presentations to Sister E. I. Newman, N.G., and Sister M. Newman, P.L.D.D.G.M., who are leaving the district to live in Christchurch. An enjoyable evening was spent in St. Mark’s Schoolroom on Monday evening, ivhen members of the Rakaia Women’s Institute held a men’s social evening. The president (Mrs. Nicol) welcomed the guests. The evening was spent in games and dancing to music played by Misses 0. Smith and Edna Kidd. A competition was won by Mr Nicol. Items were given by Mrs R. A. Oakley (song), Misses G. and M. Lee (vocal duet!, Miss M. Ashford (song and recitation), and the Rev. H. J. W. Knights (song). The accompanistes were Mrs R. A. Oakley and Miss E. England. For the institute, Mrs McAnulty presented Mrs Newman with a tea service and Miss E. I. Newman with a crystal powder bowl. The president presented Mrs Newman with a bouquet. Mrs Newman responded. Supper was served by the women. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia School Comfliittee was held on Monday evening, Mr H. Conway presiding. The balance-sheet of the recent concert showed a credit balance of £lO 4s 6d. The headmaster (Mr A. C. Nicol) reported that the roll number was 124. Messrs R. Breach and J. Barnes were appointed doorkeepers for the dance to he held to-morrow. It was decided to erect a fence round the King’s jubilee tree, and also obtain a suitably engraved tablet. It was decided to repair the tennis court. BARRHILL Mrs W. Tizzard (vice-president) presided at the September meeting of the Barrhill Women’s Institute. Competitions resulted :—Eggshell mosaic: Miss B. Chambers 1, Mrs E. Hurst 2. Plate of plain scones: Miss St. Crew 1, Mrs Toon and Mrs Hurst (equal) 2. The social competitions were won by Mrs T. Maw and Miss G. Smith. Mrs Toon and Miss Chambers werß hostesses. WILLOWBY. A large attendance gathered in the Methodist Schoolroom last evening; when the celebration of the anniversary was continued.by a “high tea’’ and concert. The tables were presided over by Mesdames McGregor, H. Chapman, G. H. li. LiU, F. Chapman, H. Crossman, S. H. Lill, It. J. Chapman, C. Noble, G. Bakers and A. S. Hayman, assisted by Misses G. Chapman, D. Taylor, R. Cone, M. Crossman, E. Hayman, Y. Hycles, M. Lill, H. Lill, A. McKay, D. Inglefield, H. Vessey, K. Stoddart, and Messrs E. C. Roberts, F. Chapman, R. Chapman and H. Lill. The Rev. R. McGregor was chairman of the after-meeting, held in the church. The Rev. D. McLachlan, of Tinwald, gave a fine address, his- theme being “Looking back, looking forward, looking upward.” Reports on church activities were given by the treasurer and secretary. Special mention was made of the good work done as caretaker of the grounds by Mr George Hillyer. A musical programme was rendered by Ashburton ladies, each item receiving an encore. Miss H. Brown sang ‘'Hold Thou My Hand” and “The Lavender Room.” Mrs Thomas and Miss S'. Smith gave “The ■Garden of Happiness” as a duet, and as a recall “I Wish I were a Tiny Bird.” Miss Merle Brown’s two. numbers were “The Gift” and “Open the Gates of the Temple,” followed by “The Waters of the Storm” and “Creation’s Hymn.” Mrs Thomas sang “The Visitor” - and “Passing By,” also two*spirituelles, “I’ve Get a Rohe” and. “Peter, Go Ring dem Bells.” The choir gave two anthems. The aecompanistes were Mrs iS. H. Lill and Miss Betty Brown. The supper, in the adjoining room, was well patronised. HINDS. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hinds Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held on Saturday evening, when the N.G. (Bro. W. E. Lowe) presided over a good attendance. Sick pay amounting to £2 was passed for payment in favour of three members. P.G. Bro. R. H. Biggar (Ashburton) was present to judge the ritual competition. Cold easterly winds have been experienced during the last few days, witli hard frosts in the morning. Mr S. Tie, of the railway staff, is on annual holidays, and Mr B. Flanjicrty, of Dunedin, is relieving. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party held m the school on' Saturday evening. Mrs D. McDonald won the ladies’ prize, »nnd Mr J. Hall the men’s prize. MAYFIELD. The Mayfield Women’s Institute held a very successful concert in the hall last evening, a record gathering being present. The funds will go to the Institute and Red Cross. The programme consisted of songs by the Institute choir, solos by Miss K. Sewell, Miss N. Whiting aeco’mpanying, and two plays. Those who took part in the first play were Mestlamcs G. A. Meikle, G. N. Harrison, W. Whiting, 0. A. Baxter, W. Greenslade, Miss J. Duff and Mrs C. Sewell, In the second Mr A. Sewell, Mesdames C. Sewell, Shimmin, W. WHiting, Miss D. Austin, Mesdames E. Keen and G. N. Harrison, Misses T. McCormick and T. Simpson, Mrs G. Murdoch, and Ruth Sewell and Mabel Whiting. Those in the choir were Mesdames G. A. Meikle, G. Murdoch, L. R. Harrison, Shimmin and C. Sewell, and Mr G. Meikle. Mrs W. Greenslade was accompaniste and Mrs W. Elmslic conductor. After the concert a dance was held. A lucky spot waltz was won bv Mrs R. Moriarty and Mr F. Harrison, and a Monte Carlo one-step by Mr J. O’Brien and partner. Lawler’s orchestra (Rakaia.) supplied the music, Mr Aschen playing an extra. Mr L. Lillev was master of ceremonies.
