a & m m M ?fr ■VJ. With the First Settlers One of the existing trading banks came to New Zealand with the first settlers. Its first office was established in 1840 at Britannia, on the beach of Port Nicholson. A few months later it moved across the harbour, with the rest of the settlement, to the site of the new town, Wellington. The bank’s safe travelled across the harbour by raft and ship, the bank’s manager, being anxious for its safety, sitting upon it. He was immediately christened by the natives.“ Jacky Box,” a name afterwards used by all the colonists. If “ trade follows the flag,” Banking keeps step with trade. The remarkable progress made by New Zealand since 1840 has been made possible by the co-operation of a sound and f well-managed banking system. The banks have branches in every nook and corner of the Dominion, to provide necessary banking facilities for all sections of the people.
