QUEEN CARNIVAL
£15,223 RAISED FOR CHARITY. SUCCESS IN CHRISTCHURCH. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, September 24. The amount raised for the relief of distress in the city by the Metropolitan Queen Carnival, a total of £15,223 Os lid, and the name of the winning queen, Mrs A. L. Cropp, representing the manufacturers and industrial group, were announced this .afternoon to a large attendance in the Civic Theatre. The total held by the city treasurer shortly before 3 p.m. to-day ,was £11,558. Between that time and approximately 4.15 p.m., when the final total was announced, nearly £3OOO was paid in by the representatives of the seven groups, including a sum of £2BO, the amount for which the coronation chair was sold to the highest bidder, Mr J. R. McKenzie. The final order of the queens was :
Mrs A. U. Cropp, manufacturers and industrial. Mrs J. R. McKenzie, racing and trotting. Mrs Herbert Hill, commerce and public service. Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne, retailers. The other candidates were: Mrs Ernest Boulton (Licensed Victuallers, wholesale and commercial travellers), Miss Joan Cunningham (professions), and Miss Betty Cotter ill (sports).
