lowcliffe. The Lowcliffe Women’s Institute meeting was presided over by Miss Hawke. There was a good attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr R. Campbell and relatives. A number of baskets and other articles weie sold for the Blind Institute, lhe winners of the competitions were as follow Best arranged jar of spring flowers, Mrs Hartley 1, Mrs W Campbell 2, Mrs Smith 3. Plate of pikelets, Mrs Hansen 1, Miss F. Tait 2, Mrs Smith 3. The roll-call “Spring Cleaning Hints,” proved both helpful and amusing, A very instructive demonstration on pastry-making was given by Mrs Oakley'' who was accorded a vote or thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses (Mrs Murdoch, Mrs bmith and Miss McKeage). Mrs G. Hansen wave a talk on the Blind Institute, which she visited while she was in Auckland as a delegate to the annual conference. WINCHMORE.

At a social evening held in the Winchmore Hall the prizes were won by Mrs W. Withell, Miss V. Prebble, Mr G. A. Franks and Mr K. Newton. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss G. Shearer arid Mr J. Bland, jun. • The mrisic for the dancing was played by Macdonald’s orchestra, with an extra by Mr R. Lamb. Mr L. Maginness was master of ceremonies. The Winchmore Basketball Club held itf closing day on Saturday afternoon on its grounds at the homestead. Some enjoyable games were played by the members and their friends, the games being refereed by Miss M. Milsom. In appreciation of the help the club had received from them, presentations were made to Mr and Mrs H. M. Verrall, Miss M. Milsom. Mr M. Verrall, Miss •G. Shearer and Miss M. Wakelin. CHERTSEY. In the return ping-pong match between "Dorie and Chertsey, the result was in favour of Dorie, which gained 33 points to Clhertsey’s 20 points. The Chertsey members entertained the visiting team. MAYFIELD. At the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning Mr Marks {travelling agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society) gave an address on the work .of the society. On Monday evening he gave a lantern lecture in the church on the work of the Bible Society. L AURISTON.

The Lauriston Cricket Club held its opening day recently. Many visitors and friends of the club were present. A friendly game was played between teams from north of the railway line and south of it, south, winning by a narrow margin. At the afternoon tea adjournment the president (Mr W. D. Brunsden) declared the season officially open, and wished the club a successful season. The fortnightly social and dance were held in the Lauriston Hall, under the auspices of the Lauriston Social Club. Competitions, controlled by Messrs H. Dalgety and H. Farquhar, were won by Miss E. Maidens 1 and Mrs W: E. Smith 2; Mr F. Brown 1 and Mr J. McQui.lkin 2. Music for the dancing was played by Mr T. Lawler (Rakaia), the master of ceremonies being Mr H. Dalgety. RAKAIA. The Rakaia Football Club held its annual bail in the Town Hall to mark the close of the season. The hall was decorated with blue and white streamers, and the supper tables were bright with spring flowers. Music was played by the Casino Dance Band (Christchurch]!, with extras by Mr T. Lawler. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Jean Holmes and Mr R. Morris, and a luckv spot dance by Miss Johnson and Ml* T. Lawler. Messrs L. L. Street and P. Doig were masters of ceremonies. PENDARVES.

The card social conducted by the Pendarves Hall Committee and Tennis Club was well attended. Competitions were won by Miss Daisy M. Watson and Mr J. Taylor, and Mrs Taylor and Mr F. W. Ironside. Misses Ethel and Marie Malcolm played the music for the dance, and Messrs P. P. Dbig and F. W. Ironside were masters of ceremonies. The return cards match between Chertsey and Seafield was held in the Pendarves Hall. Chertsey was the winner by 3081 to 2833 points. Mr R. Baynes controlled the games. Supper was served by the Seafield women. A dance was held later, music* being played by Mr_ A. Bennison, Mrs R. Baynes, Miss N. Bennison and Miss M. Redman. STAVELEY. There was a very large attendance at the fifty-fourth anniversary ball of the Loyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F. Music was supplied by Cook’s orchestra and extras were played by Mrs A. Lockhead and Miss Gladys Healey (Ashburton). The grand march was led by Miss E. Hood and Mr G. Bing. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss P. Tod (Mayfield) and Mr Roy Paterson, and lucky spot waltzes were won by Miss K. Gallagher (Valeria) and Mr J, Childs, and Miss King (Mount Somers) and Mr .1). Burt. A football team of Boy Scouts from Kaiapoi visited Staveley at the weekend, and on Saturday a match was played, the visitors winning, and so taking home a cup that is held for

competition among the Mayfield, Mount Somers, Bushside and Ivaiapui scouts. The score was 20 to 2.

In the evening, a. social was held in the Bushside School. For the dancing, music was supplied by Messrs N. Hadler, A. Fagan, F. Cutler, A. Langridgo and E. Gray. Items were given by Commissioner E. Gray and the visiting team. The Bushside captain (H. Grigg) passed over the challenge cup to the Kaiapoi captain (Ben Eder), and the winners were congratulated by Mr F. Fittock. A lucky spot waltz was won by Misses Doreen Wriglit and Andrew Hicks, and a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr E. Totty and Miss Ailsa Anderson (Methven). Commissioner Gray returned thanks for the liospi-. tality liis troop had enjoyed. Miss Jean Lorgelly, Mr E. Burgess and Mr G. Mcßae were the prize-win-ners at the fortnightly social in the Stavelev Hall.

The cold! weather continues, and there is but little spring growth, which is causing concern among farmers. There are even cases of grazing the road for a little feed. Last night,there was again a hard frost, with plenty of iec about this morning. FAIRTON At the meeting of the Fairton Women’s Institute on Thursday, Mrs Anderson presided over a fair attendance. Mrs Oram and Mrs Chappell were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly counciljneeting of the MidCanterbury Federation. Mesdames Anderson and Thompson were appointed representatives to the health, camp campaign meeting. Mrs Vincent demonstrated the making of cane and raffia cake baskets. Competition winners were: —Bar of soap,: Mrs Dunphy 1, Mrs Nutbrown 2, Mrs Evans 3. Jar of flowers: Mrs Anderson 1, Mrs Nutbrown 2, MrslDunphy‘3. Article made from half a yard of britway: Miss O. Evans 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Mrs McCall and Mrs Phillips (equal) 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Willis, Nutbrown and Phillips. ASHTON-WATERTON. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ashton-Water-ton Women’s Institute, held in the Ashton School. Mrs J. Small (vicepresident) presided in the absence of Miss Blee. The financial statement for the birthday party held recently was read by the treasurer (Miss Bell). It showed a good credit balance. Misses V. Bell and M. Blee were appointed delegates to the half-yearly Federation meeting to be held in Ashburton on October 4. Community singing was then indulged in. The competitions, judged by Mrs .Small, resulted:— Sultana cake: Mrs Shimmius 1, Miss W. Blee 2, Miss V. Bell 3. Covered coat-hanger: Miss F. Bell 1, Mrs Shimmins 2, Miss E. Wotton 3. Article made from three skeins of New Zealand wool: Mrs Shimmins 1, Miss Wotton 2, Miss F. Bell 3. The special prize for the best collection of home-made handkerchief sachets was won by Miss E. Read. The hostesses were Misses E. Wotton and V- Bell. MONTALTO. There was a large attendance at Montalto School on Saturday evening for the conclusion of the euchre and dance tournament between Montalto and Auama. The home team wen with 251 points, Annina 214. The ladies’ prize was won by- Miss J. Ross, and the men’s prize by Mr R<. J. Anderson. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs A. J. Rushton and Mr J. Rose. The music was supplied by Mr C. L. Gidden, with extras by Messrs R. Branch and A. Phillips. Mr G. Branch was master of ceremonies. Mr R. Gallagher spoke on behalf of Montalto Club, and Mr Rushton responded on behalf of Annina. Mr Rushton also presented the prizes.
