SHARP RISE IN POTATOES,

AUCKLAND MARKET VERY FIRM

AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. _ The price of potatoes has a |p ia risen in spite of the arrival of about 7000 sacks by the Waipiata to-day, and Red Dakotas are now selling at £ls a ton, and whites at £l4 5s to £l4 10s a ton through store. The rise is £3 10s in a week. ... The market is very firm, and stin further rises are possible. The rise in the Christchurch market was even more marked. This morning one Auckland merchant attempted to buy in Christthurch at £l2 a ton f.0.b., but sellers asked £l3. When the order was telegraphed at this price, however, it was refused, and later in the "day some holders were quoting as high as £ls. A week ago f.o.b. prices were round £9 a ton. The fact that such high prices are bringing few sellers into the market is taken to indicate that very few potatoes are available in the South Island. If this is the case still higher prices can be expected, as there is no other source from which supplies can he drawn. The difficulty is accentuated by the heavy demand. At Pukekohe the crop is very disappointing, and it is not anticipated that it will be able to cope with the local demand until about the second week in November. The yield is very poor.

CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. The past week has been exceptionally active on the potato market. Prices quoted to-day showed a further rise for all lines, the increase being as much as £2 in the case of whites on trucks. The demand from all centres has been heavy, particularly from the north. Farmers’ supplies are almost exhausted, and with the small quantity available merchants predict that the shortage may be serious. The last big shipment to the north will be made this week, and will consist of 8000 or 9000 Prices for milling and fowl wheat are unchanged. The demand continues steady, and is being satisfied by spring deliveries from the country. There is a shortage of bran and pol laid at present, but this should be rectified when crops are cut. Spring Eowtli has been slow all over New Zeatid, and this has caused a firming of the market. There are plentiful gupplies of flour. Business is generally quiet on the seed market. The demand for spring wheat has been disappointing, and oats, too, are slow. Stocks that have gone out are mainly for spring sowing. There has been no shipping of partridge peas to the Home market, tho general tendency being to mark time.
