SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening, when there were present Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), J. Cook, W. Hi. Robinson, C. Dellow, W. J. Miller, S. Groves, H. Money, W. H. Sherratt and E. H. Childs. The report of the inspectors, who recently visited the school, was presented, and on the motion of Messrs Robinson and Childs, the committee congratulated the headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) and his staff on the excellent report that had come to hand. The Canterbury Education Board advised that the question of painting the school would have to be deferred.
The chairman, Mr Cook and the headmaster were appointed to represent the committee at the health camp campaign meeting this afternoon. For the visiting committee, MiGroves reported that he had found everything in order in the school. Id is visit had been made on a wet day and lie had noticed that a great deal of water was lying about the grounds. The headmaster reported that The attendance was still affected by sickness. The roll number for the first week of the third term was 452 and the attendance had been 84, while in the second week the roll number was 453, and the attendance 428. Fourteen new pupils had been admitted at the start of the term. The boys had won the senior and junior grades at lootball and the girls had been runners-up in basketball at the schools tournament last Saturday. The committee extended its congratulations to the members of the staff who had trained the sports teams.
