McCREADY BEATS CISTOLDI. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, September 23. A professional heavy-weight wrestling contest at the Town Hall between Angelo Cistoldi, 16.1, and Earl McCready, 16.10, resulted in a win for McCready when the Italian was unable to continue after conceding a submission fall to the Canadian’s octopus deathlock in the seventh round.

ANDRESEN AND CISTOLDI DRAW.

NAPIER, September 23,

Andresen and Cistoldi drew in a wrestling bout on Saturday. Andresen obtained a submission fall with a full Nelson with his feet in the fifth round, and Cistoldi a submission fall with a hammer-lock in the seventh round. The bout went the full distance.

ANDRESEN AND BLOMFIELD DRAW. AATELUNGTON, September 23. Ole Andresen made his first appearance in the Wellington Town Han tonight in a brilliant contest with the Aucklander, “Lofty” Blomfield, in which the wrestlers drew with a fall each. The bout went the full eight rounds. It was frequently spectacular, and was strenuous all the way. Andresen appeared to win most of the rounds.

ITALIANS ARRIVE.

A FORMIDABLE PAIR. The two latest additions to the ranks of the professional wrestlers, Tony Catalani and Angelo Cistoldi, are like-ly-looking prospects, and their records indicate that they should meet with a good deal of success in New Zealand. They arrived! together by the Alakura from San Francisco at Wellington on Friday, hut their ways soon parted, Catalini being dispatched south, and Cistoldi travelling in the opposite direction.

Catalani, who is 35 years old, is the senior of the pair by ten years, Cistoldi haying celebrated his 25th birthday aboard the Alakura. Both looked the picture of health when they stepped off the steamer. Catalani is naturally of a swarthy complexion, and Cistoldi is bronzed by a combination of sun-bathing and use of the ultra-violet ray lamp which lie carries with him to cure bruises and similar minor injuries. Catalani, whose facial beauty is completed by a bristling waxed moustache, is the taller of the two, but he gave his weight as 15st 51b as against Cistoldi’s 16st 111 b.

Boxed with Dempsey. Catalani was born in America, his mother being of Italian and his father of Spanish extraction. His acquaintance with wrestling dates from the Great AVar in which he served as a sailor in the American Navy. He had his early matches in Italian, French, and English rings while the fleet was in Europe, and, after hostilities ceased, left the service to become a professional wrestler. Some of his inqiortant contests have been with Henri de Glane, “Strangler” Lewis, and Jim Londos. He also boxed six rounds with Jack Dempsey during the latter’s “barnstorming” tour before meeting Tunney in 1926. Catalani has had 1 more than a nodding acquaintance with Dan O’Mahoney, the present world champion, and has had several work-outs with him. He has a wholesome respect for the champion’s “Irish whip” hold which he described as a variation of the flying mare, the variation consisting of the fact that the hold on the man thrown is not released. The victim has no sooner crashed to the mat once than ho is again hoisted over his opponent’s shoulder for another throw. Catalani said that he used a variation of the hold! himself, while he had aa-

other specialty, a Japanese chin lock. Catalani belongs to Indianapolis, the motor-racing centre. Cistoldi has been competing as a professional wrestler for five years since he left the Boston University at which he studied architecture. Ho gained some prominence as a. footballer, but wrestling was his favourite athletic exercise, and when he had completed his studies he decided that wrestling, liberally flavoured by the flying tackles of. the football field, would bring him a better financial return than the profession of an. architect. Like Sonnenberg and other products of the unversity wrestling schools, he made rapid progress and has already had two title bouts, one with Jim Browning, and the other with Ed Don George, who is regarded as the world champion in the New England State. Cistoldi claims to have beaten Cy Williams, whose visit to New Zealand this season came to an untimely end, and also Dean Detton, who is well known out here. A prominent wrestler over whom lie claims a decision is “Jumping Joe Savoldi. , . He does not rely upon any special hold, but prefers to place his trust in his ability to take advantage of any slips made by his opponent. He has endeavoured to master all the principle holds, and, if anything, lie favours the Boston Crab. In the States, Cistoldi has something of a reputation as a “tough” wrestler, but he is unlikely to display his ability in that direction in New Zealand. As he was embarking at San Francisco he was told or Williams’s disqualification and warned that he would be immediately shipped back home if he offended the authorities in New Zealand.
