FLOATING FORTS
UNITED STATES BATTLESHIPS.
PLANS FOR BUILDINC SEVEN.
HEAVILY GUNNED AND ARMOURED. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This U!ay, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 23. A correspondent of the “Sun-Her-ald” says that having rejected the British proposals to reduce future tonnage and armaments of warships, irrespective of what other Powers do, the United States will lay down, in January, 1937, the first of seven new maxi-mum-sized battleships, designed as floating fortresses, serving as bases for operations in distant waters, for example in the Far East. Mr Hector By water, in the “Daily Telegraph,” explains that each vessel will be of 35,000 tons, with a speed of from 22 to 23’ knots, and. carrying twelve 16-inch and sixteen 5-inch guns. The ships will be massively armoured to resist gun-fire and air bombs. A special feature will be the immense capacity for stowing oil fuel, ensuring a steaming radius of 8000 miles. Each vessel will cost £9,500,000.
