The bodies of Mrs Elsie Steele, aged 28, her son Glen, aged four, and her daughter Norma, aged six, were found on a river bank at Cardwell. When a fisherman was stepping from his boat he trod on something yielding, and was horrified to find it was the body of one of the children.
The husband of the dead woman was absent from home at the time of the tragedy.
