CRASH IN IRELAND ENDS TRIP

Lieutenant Felix Waitkus, of Kohler, took off from the Floyd Bennet air field at 5.40 a.m. on a solo non-stop flight to Kaunas, Lithuania, via Newfoundland, Ireland, England, Denmark and the Baltic Sea. He intended to fly in tho .sub-stratospliere, and expected the flight to take from 28 to 30 hours.

Lieutenant Waitkus crashed at Ballinribc (County Mayo), where lie struck a tree. He escaped unhurt.
Lieutenant Waitkus said the weather had been bad and most of the time lie was flying blind. The weather became worse on approaching the Irish coast. He was very tired and his petrol was running low, so he circled and spotted a field, but the ’plane struck a bush and overturned.
