Bruce, speaking at the meeting of the Political Committee of the League of Nations, strongly opposed the proposal by the Argentine that the League publish ethnological and historical works dealing with the origins of American civilisation. He said the 'League was not the proper medium for the publication of such things when certain countries were not paying their contributions. Mr S. M. Bruce stated that Australia fully sympathised with intellectual co-operation especially inculcating into the youth of a country understanding of other nations regarding which lectures on international relations were delivered in all schools. Neyci’theless, his opposition to spend the League funds on the publication of historical works applied equally to the proposal* to translate a collection of European classics. The object was admirable, but it was a matter for the Governments interested, educational institutions and private bodies. . ..
