ILLEGAL LIQUOR

PROPRIETOR OF CLUB FINED.

COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND), September 20. “There is no doubt that a night club of this type, where liquor is controlled, is better than the flask method or drinking in motor-ears or cubicles. The point is, however, whether it should be there at all,” said! Mr F. D. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Maurice Hampton McLennan and Helen Viola McLennan were charged that at a club at Hillsborough, situated in the no-license district of Mount Rosldll, they kept or used such premises as a place of resort for the consumption of liquor. In convicting defendants and imposing a fine of £2 and costs, Mr Hunt remarked: “I have no doubt that- this is a dummy club, an ordinary night club, such as we read about. If there was no liquor there would be no night club. I suppose I am getting old, but I think dances should be conducted without liquor.” The police stated that apparently anyone who was reasonable lespect* able could become a member of the club by signing a membership form and paying a fee. A member could take a partner and guests, and liquor could be taken on to the premises. Members took liquor to the club and placed it in charge of a bar steward. The do titles were labelled with the owner’s name, and given out when required “We regard this place as a source of social mischief, as it enables young people, especially girls, to consume liquor,” said Sub-lilspector J. Fox.
