COMMERCIAL NEWS

GRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE DUNEDIN MARKET. DUNEDIN, September 13. Broken weather throughout the South Island is delaying the sowing of spring wheat. As a consequence only small quantities of seed wheat are going to the country for the time being. Farmers generally are well ahead with their work as they took advantage of the fine weather earlier in the season to get their land ready. Some inquiries have been received for oats for shipment, _ but owing to the small stocks held in this centre, merchants are unable to quote. The nominal value for Heavy A Gartons is 3s 2d, sacks extra, on trucks, at country sidings, 3s for ordinary A s and 2s 9d for Bi’s. The chaff market is inclined to firm. Values locally are unchanged. The demand is confined to prime quality with £5 as the quotation for truck loads, ex truck, sacks extra, and £5 10s for small lots, exstores.

The potato market shows greater firmness and there has been a rise in prices. Freshly-picked Arran Chiefs are worth to-day £8 10s a ton, sacks included, and King Edwards £9. Local supplies are now exhausted, and this market has to draw from both Southland and Canterbury for its requirements. _ • No volume of business is being transacted in the seed markets. The retail demand had commenced, but it slackened off with the wet weather. All markets remain steady. There has been more inquiry from overseas for some export lines.
