TRADE WITH SWISS

CONSUL EXPLAINS BALANCE. WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. Exception to the statements made by the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’ Association concerning the trade balance between New Zealand and Switzerland is taken by Dr, A. C. Blau, of Auckland, Consul-general for Switzerland, in a statement sent to the Mayor of Wellington. Figures had been quoted setting out that while New Zealand bought £24,875 worth of goods from Switzerland in the first six months of this year, Switzerland bought £49 worth from New Zealand.

I>r. Blau explains that the figures are totally misleading, as Switzerland has to import through other countries, a large portion of her trade being done through London, from which market Swiss buyers take a large amount of New Zealand produce. Figures kept for trade with Australia showed a balance heavily in favour of the latter, and it was thought that the New Zealand figures, when ascertained, would give identical results. .
