NEW TARIFF REPRISALS. United Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept, 12. It is authoritatively stated that the Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, has notified the German Ambassador (Hans Herr Luther) that, from October 15, all German imports into the United States must pay the highest prevailing duty rates. . This action is taken because of persistent, and flagrant discrimination against American imports by Germany. Mr Roosevelt’s formal directions to the Treasury Department to withhold from Germany the extensions of lower duties on nearly 100 articles made in Swedish, Belgian, and Haitian trade pacts is expected to be announced before September 15.
The German-American Commercial Treaty, which was the first unconditional most favoured nation pact entered into by the United States, ends by Germany’s desire and action on October 15, and the new tariffs on German goods will coincide with the treaty’s abrogation.
