RAKAIA. A meeting of the committee of the Rakaia Bowling Club was held in the library. Mr C. Garrigan presided. Six new members were elected. It was decided to run the Labour Day tournament under the same rules as last year. A small sub-committee was elected to make arrangements for an honours board to be erected in the pavilion. Opening day was fixed for October 12. The annual dance of the Hakaia subbranch of the Plunket Society, held in the Town Hall, attracted many visitors from surrounding districts. The stage was decorated with japonica and green streamers and greenery. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss Vida Black and Mr F. Cornelius, Miss Joan Breach and Mr H. A. Barnett. Cook’s orchestra played music for the dancing, and supper extras were played by Miss Richards and Miss Ruth Morrison. Messrs C. J. Ryan and D. iP. Henderson" were masters of ceremonies. MAYFIELD. Only .70 inches of rain were registered in Mayfield during August, rain falling oh six days. The heaviest, fall was .25 inches on August 31, when neatly two inches of snovi fell. WESTERFIELD The August meeting of the Westerfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Rifle Club rooms. The president (Mrs D. Shaw) presided over a good attendance. One new member was elected. Mrs Begg (Wakanui) gave an interesting demonstration on “Fermentry,” and Mrs H. Dillon gave a demonstration on re-footing stockings. Mrs Begg judged the competitions, which resulted, as follow: —Plain sultana cake: Mrs W. J. Lowry and Miss M. Lowry (equal) 1, Mrs R. McCann and Mrs I. Fechney (equal) 3.
