LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian,” Sept. 7, 1885.) Brutal Assault.—A case of brutal assaidt occurred on Sunday evening. Constable' Beddek, while endeavouring to convey a drunken man, who was struggling violently, to tne loek-up, called upon a passer-by (Mr Harry Friedlander) for assistance, which was at once rendered. While, however, Mr Friedlander was kneeling on the ground holding the man, he was kicked in the face in a most cowardly and brutal manner by a man standing by, a nasty gash and several severe bruises being caused. The miscreant was arrested last evening, and will be brought before the R.M. Pianoforte Tuner. —Mr C. A. Harrow, pianoforte tuner, requests us to state that it is his intention to visit Ashburton district periodically and that. < he will receive orders, which may be left at Mr Farley’s, for the tuning of pianofortes or American organs. Headmastership Received.—Mr Hector Dempsey, late of Ashburton, has received the appointment of neadmastership of the New Plymouth Central School.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS SYNE.
(From the "Guardian,” Sept. 7, 1910.)
Band Contest.—A successful contest under the auspices of the Temperance Brass Band was held last evening, when five parties engaged in a quartet competition. The competing parties were so arranged that all junior members of the band were included, the idea of the contest being to improve the younger players. Messrs T. M. Clark and H. A. Humphreys acted as judges, and the results were as follow: Messrs Freeman, R. Anthony, Burgess and Andrews 1, Messrs Leitch, Lockhard, L. Terris and Mathieson 2. In view of the success of the competition, which was of a private nature, it was decided to hold another open to the general public. More Adequate Service. —At the Borough Council meeting a fortnight ago a petition was received from Dunsandel praying that the Minister of Railways should consider running a more adequate train service between' Christchurch, and Ashburton. The councillors signed the petition, which was then placed in the hands of a canvasser to procure further signatures. At last evening’s meeting of the council the Mayor reported that the canvasser had secured 210 signatures. It was decided to return the petition to its originators.
