DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL

The Ashburton County Council continued its meeting ofter the “Guardian” Avent to press yesterday. The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society wrote approving of the council’s plans to combat erosion at Hakatere, and expressing the hope that the work would be commenced at an early date. It was agreed to proceed with the work and to ask the Wakanui Road Board for a donation toward the cost. The Main Highways Board Avrote that the scheme to transfer a portion of main highway to a partially-formed road on the Ashburton-StaA'eley route did not commend itself. The question of this proposed route was deferred for 12 months. The Public Works Department wrote asking the council to attend to the fill-ing-in of a number of slight depressions on the aerodrome before transport aircraft could use the. ground. It was decided to ask the Department if there Avas any reasonable chance of the ground being used by large aeroplanes, before the council Avent to the expense of filling-in. It Avas pointed out that the Southern Cross and the Faith in Australia had used the ground Avithout any inconvenience. The Ashburton Stock Auctioneers’ Association Avrote asking the council to erect a loading bank at the Ashburton saleyards. The council agreed to the request. The Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association Avrote asking the council to keep phosphorised pollard for poisoning rabbits in stock for the use of farmers. It was decided to reply that the council bad no poAver to manufacture this type of poison. The Postmaster at Ashburton (Mr W. J. Minogue) Avrote soliciting the support of the council in the promotion of children’.s health camps. Mr W. G. Gallagher urged the council to give every encouragement to the proposal, Avhich must commend itself to every resident of the district. The chairman and Messrs Gallagher and Frampton were appointed to represent the council at a public meeting to be called at an early date.
