AIR RAID DEFENCE
BRITAIN’S REHEARSAL.
LABOUR’S STRONG CRITICISM
LONDON, August 17
“The Government’s air raid defence measures on July 7, were a farcial gesture that seared the people and did not provide real protection.” Mr Reginald Stamp, vice-chairman of of the London County Council Fire Brigade, made that statement in the “News-Chronicle,” voicing the frequent Labour opposition to the scheme. He added: “It is impossible to expect volunteers successfully to co-operate with firemen and) other highly-trained men, especially when there are probably hundreds of simultaneous fires.
“Moreover, gas masks were only available to the rescuers—the firemen and, police—leaving the populace, who are unable to afford 55s for a mask, defenceless. The Government disregarded the new types of gas that attack tire body, and did not provide for the safeguarding of food. “It also failed to provide for the defence of drains, and all the ciocontaminators in the world will not prevent a massacre if the main drainage system is blown up, releasing the gases.”
