LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 30, 1885.) Pigeon Shooting Club.—A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Pigeon Shooting Club, which was to have been lit Id at Quill’s Hotel on Thursday evening, fell through on account of lack of attendance. Trees Mutilated.—We regret to nothat, in addition to cutting down a number of trees in Baring Square, which may have been necessary, the authorities have mutilated those remaining in such a manner as to fender them very unsightly. Piles for Bridge.—A consignment of piles having arrived from Australia, the contractor for the Ashburton traffic bridge is now pushing the work ahead. Some three dozen piles have now been driven, and a start has been made with laying the beams ready, for the decking. Nuggets on Show.—Five nuggets of gold, which are stated to have been found by (H*. Bailey and party some two years ago, west of the Divide, behind Ashburton, were exhibited in Mr 1L Murray’s window yesterday. The gold is much water-worn, and experts state that it must have come from a very valuable, reef.
