THE COMPETITIONS

THE ASHBURTON FESTIVAL. THE SECOND DAY AWARDS.

Further awards were announced at the close of the second evening session of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival in the Majestic Theatre last night, when fourteen classes were on the programme. Most of the competitors were very young, but they presented some good work, the standard generally being high. The attendance at the evening session was not large. The evening was a very enjoyable one. Results were announced as follow, competitors being resident in Ashburton unless otherwise stated: — instrumental Section. PIANO SOLO, 10 and under 12. “A Ceftic Song,” (Dunhill) and “Rondo” (Andre). bliss Maureen Black, 86pts ... 1 Miss June Frandsen (Cli-ch), 85pts 2 Miss Patricia. Cullen, 84pts .... 3 The judge said this had been a very even class, but most of the players had erred on the question of speed. Two. contrasted numbers had been set, one slow and the other bright, but the competitors had, in most cases, taken them at about the same speed. Interpretation had counted against most of them. The winner had 1 good accentuation and rythm. Vocal Section. ACTION SONG, boys or girls under 14. Own Selection. Miss Beatrice Simpson (Cli-ch) 86pts 1 Miss Betty Burt (Ch-ch), Sopts ... 2 Miss Merlyn Tocld (Riccarton) 83pts 3 The judge said that a class for “competitors under 14 years” allowed too much range in ages and maturity of voice, as there might be children of six competing against others of 14, and the placings had been decided on this question of maturity. He highly recommended Miss Greta Archer, of Christchurch, to whom he awarded 82 points. SONG IN CHARACTER, girls or hoys, 14 and under 16. Commenting on this class, the judge said that it had been rather disappointing in the question of the pitch of the voices, for pitch a singer must have, no matter how good the rest of the work • it was one of the essentials. Most of the competitors did not take sufficient notice of the accompaniment. The voices, however, were mostly pleasing. DUET IN CHARACTER, under 16. Own selection. (First Section).
