FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

Ashburton Club. —The committee of the Ashburton Club decided last evening to add £l2 w'orth of new books to the library. The collection includes encyclopaedias, dictionaries, “All Round the World” (two volumes), Virtue’s Shakespeare, with excellent plates, and many other valuable and interesting works. Members have every reason to feel proud of their library. Mount Hutt County.—The ratepayers in the Mount Hutt Riding will hold a meeting next Friday to consider the following resolutions: —(l) That the ratepayers of the proposed County of Mount Hutt are willing that the headworks of the w'ater supply shall be under the control of the Ashburton Cc-unty Council and their successors. (2) That the raepayers of the proposed County of Mount Hutt will pay a fair proportion of the cost of maintenance of headworks and head races. (3) That it be Respectfully suggested to his Excellency tlie .Governor that there be six ridings in the proposed new County, each riding to elect one councillor.

Freak of Nature. —A curious freak of nature was found by a Dromore farmer among his sheep in the form of a dead lamb born with only one eye, situated, like the eye of the Cyclops of old, exactly in the middle cf the forehead.

Silver Rose-howl. —A massive solid silver rose-bowl, mounted on an ebony plinth, is at present on view in the window of Air J. V. de Beer. The trophy, w'hich is a fine specimen of the silversmith’s trade, has been presented to the Ashburton County Racing Club by Mr Hugo Friedlander, and yvill be competed for in the Ashburton County Handicap to he run on September 14. Air John Grigg also presented a trophy in the year 1908 in connection with the Ashburton Cup Handicap. Tinwajd Tennis Club. —The annual meeting of the Tinwald Tennis Club saw' the following officers elected: — Patron, Air O. Doherty; president, Air J. Gudsell; yice-presidents, Messrs W. Nosw'orthy, M.P., H. Davjis, W. A. Alorgan, T. Wilson, W. Hopwood and H. Watson; captain, Mr W.. Clothier; vice-captain, Mr L. Helem; secretary, Mr W. Carroll; treasurer, Miss L. Clothier; committee, Misses E. Schneider, K. McKenzie, I. Wilson, and Messrs C. Fowke, G. McKenzie, H. Shearer and the Rev. B. G. Fox.
