METHVEN. The monthly meeting of the Metliven Women’s Institute was held in the Anglican Hall, when Mrs L. L. Richards presided over a very large attendance. Opportunity was taken to welcome Mesdames Ray Ireland and W. J. Woods on their return from their honeymoons. Mrs K. Aitken, the delegate to the Dominion Conference at Auckland, gave an interesting port of the work there. Mr Stanley Smith gave an interesting lecture on the cultivation and culture of spring flowers and bulbs. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follow: —Prettiest cake plate: Mrs H. Fryer 1, Miss M. Hampton 2, Mrs L. R. Mangin 3. Rest bloom: Mrs A. C, Watson 1, Miss M. Hampton 2. Ironed serviette: Mrs R. Ireland 1, Mrs A. C. Watson 2. Egg dish: Mrs A. C. Watson 1, Mrs R. Ireland 2. The president announced that the finals of the drama festivals for the County would be-held in Ashburton on September 6. The hostesses were Mesdames A. S. Findlay, R. Grigg, A. Grigg, A. Guthrie, A. S. Kennedy' and Miss M. Grieve. « ANAMA. At the fortnightly euchre evening, held in the school under the auspices of the local sports committee, a large number were present. Mr A. Rushton (the chairman) presented prizes to Mrs A. Brown and Mr R. Lamb. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss M. Edmond and Mr J. Rose. Mr A. Brown controlled the games. RAKAIA.

Mr L. O. Oakley presided at a meeting of the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association, which was held in the Public Library on Monday evening. The balance-sheet, which was presented by the treasurer (Mr H. A. MoraySmith), showed a good credit balance. The president congratulated the committee on the successful match that had been held, and also congratulated the stewards on the able manner in which they had . carried out their duties. The match was the best that the association had ever conducted. Members of the Kereone Hockey Club held a social evening in the lodge hall 6n Monday in honour of Miss O. Smith, who has been selected for the Ashburton representative team to play in the Dominion women’s hockey tournament at Gisborne. The evening was spent in games and dancing. Music was played' by Mrs L. Robinson, Misses N. Robinson, Joan Breach, Edna Kidd and Mr H. Rehrnes. Competitions ■were won by Miss N. Tatterson and Mr R-. Cornelius, and Misses C. Johnston, D. Cornelius, and Mr 11. Cornelius and Mr D. Barnard. An item was given by Miss Edna Kidd. For the Kereone Club, Miss M. Baker made a presentation to Miss O. Smith. Miss Smith also received a present from Mr C. Davison on behalf of all others present. Miss Smith responded. Supper was served. Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., addressed a large meeting in St. Mark’s Schoolroom on Monday evening. Mr McCombs explained the policy of the Labour Party and answered questions. A vote of thanks to the speaker and confidence in the Labour Party was passed.

LAURISTON. The Lauriston Social Club’s fortnightly social and dance were held in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. Messrs j"). Hampton and A. Lemon were in charge of the competitions, which were Avon by Miss M. Hampton 1, Miss E. Letham 2; Mr W. Crozier 1, Mr H. Addis 2. Music for the dancing was played by Mr V. Healey (Ashburton), with an extra by Mr H. Addis (Lyndhurst). Mr H. Dalgety Avas master of ceremonies.
