MODEL OF DAIRY

NEW CLASS IN SHOW SCHEDULE TO ENCOURAGE MODERN METHODS. A new feature at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show this year will be a competition for a model dairy, shed and yard, which has been introduced as the result of the efforts of Mr J. W. Butterick, of Wakanui.

It is hoped that the class will encourage dairy farmers to build up-to-date yards and dairies. Mr Buttriclc has visited dairy farms in all parts of Canterbury, and while he has found many fine milking sheds, the yards and surroundings have in most cases been bad. There has been a lack of facilities for washing, and in some cases washings have been drained into waterraces, thereby polluting the drinking water for stock i and' wasting what could be used to good effect on the land.

Mr Butterick’s plan is to have the shed and yard raised from the ground level so that all washings can be caught in a portable tank and easily carried to any part of the farm to be used in irrigating work. He has offered a prize of £5 5s for the competition, and it is probable that this amount will; be fairly substantially subsidised. The conditions for this novel contest are:—

The prize is offered for a model (4ffc or more to scale) of an eight-cow or more dairy, shed and yard. The shed and yard must he sufficiently above ground level to enable all washing to be caught in a portable tank or trough. To be arranged for either hand or milking machine, with force pump or automatic pressure outfit to wash shed and yard; levels to be graduated toward tank or trough. Ramp to be shown from ground level to level of shed and yard. Feed arrangements may or may not be provided. Roof to be made movable for exhibition purposes. The winning model will become the property of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
