GERMANY PROTESTS

ANTI-NAZI RIOT AT NEW YORK. AMERICAN SYMPATHY WITH JEWS, United Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 30. The State Department to-day received a note from the German Government protesting against the insult to the German flag during the riot when the liner ' Bremen was leaving New York. It is authoritatively learned that the note requests that those who tore.' down the flag should be punished, but does not demand an official apology. Officials, of the department withheld comment and forwarded the communication ' to the Governor of New York (Mr H. H. Lehmann), as the incident occurred in New York, and those charged with disorder are subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of that state.

Meanwhile, however, the administration took occasion to express official sympathy with Jews undergoing persecution in Germany. In response to a request for intervention by eight Jewish leaders, the Acting-Secretary of State (Mr William Phillips) published following letter addressed to them jointly:

“I fully understand your solicitude regarding the experiences of these, groups reported to *be suffering in Germany. In - concepts of religious freedom and liberty of conscience for all constitute . the most .fundamental principles of our -civilisation and political faith. This being so, American people are always sympathetic to the maintenance of these concepts in the United States as well as in other countries.”

The Mayor of New York (Mr F. H. La Guardia), who happened to be in Washington to-day, said that the attackers of the Bremen’s flag were under arrest and would he prosecuted -for the offence. With a smile, he added : “The flag was saved by a member of the police force, an American citizen named Marris Solomon.” NEW NAZI CAMPAIGN. “TREASON” TO BUY FROM JEWS. * PURCHASE OF LAND BANNED. LONDON, July 31. The Berlin correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says a development in the Nazis’ anti-Jewish campaign is reported from the Rhineland, where local decrees in many towns and villages forbid Jejvs to settle or acquire land. •

! The decree also states that the purchase of goods from Jews Will be regarded as treason against the nation. The Berlin correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says that, though a Jew is deprived of the privileges of citizenship, a new decree invests him with all its obligations. The new decree permits non-Aryans, with not more than 60 per cent, of Jewish blood, to volunteer for active service.
