LISMORE 1. The local branch of the. Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its fourth. anniversary on Friday evening. The schoolroom was prettily decorated with the division’s colours, red, white, blue and green. The first part of the evening took the ' form of a national fair and competition. The decorated stalls made a very effective setting, while the competitions, controlled by Mr 0. Corbett, proved most entertaining. In the absence of the president (Mrs J. Jacob) Mrs Ash- * ton (vice-president) presided and welcomed the guests. Apologies and greetings were received from Mrs Johnson (president of the Mid-Canter-bury Executive), Mr It. Oakley (president of the Mid-Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union), MitchamRokeby, Anama and Seafield branches of the division. Mrs Begg (president of the Ashburton branch) and Mrs J. Fleming, who were guests of the branch, extended greetings and: spoke in eulogistic terms of the activities of the branch since jts formation. Mrs Begg gave a brief account of the housekeepers’ scheme, of which she is secretary. Mr A. Fleming, on behalf of the Mayfield branch of the Farmers’ Union, wished the branch many happy birthdays and success in the future. Miss R. Baxter, the youngest member, lit the candles on the cake, which was made and decorated by Mrs D. Glassey. Mrs J. Fleming cut the cake. Mrs Ashton, on behalf of the branch, thanked Mr Corbett and the school children for their untiring assistance, which was greatly appreciated. The following were the stallholders: —Miscellaneous (England, Wales and Japan), Mrs Glassey (Wales), Mrs Lilley (Japan), Miss Bell (England); novelty (Holland), Mrs and Miss Young; sweets (Japajn), junior members, Misses Sparrov*. Clucas, Young and Baxter (3). The winners of the competitions were:—Skittle alley: Mrs Sparrow, Mr Chalmers. Nail-driving: Miss Bell, Mr R. Good. Candle-light-ing: Miss Todd, Mr J. Addis. A lucky spot one-step was won by Mrs McDougall and Mr R. Good- A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs R. Good. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr, Mrs and Miss Mackimmey, with extras by Mrs J. Green, Messrs 0. Corbett, C. L. Giddens and J. Whiting. Mr A. Chalmers was M.C. Supper was served in a marquee, which was decorated with greenery, lemon and/green streamers and bowls of shamrock, and was in charge of Mrs Addis, who represented Ireland. The prizes for aggregate points in the competitions during the year were presented to the winners by Mrs Begg. That for the seniors was won by Miss Bell. That for the best bloom was won by Miss Sparrow, with Miss Clucas as runnerup. Community singing was led by Mr Corbett. The branch has every reason to be pleased with the effort, as the funds were considerably augmented. Sunday School classes were formed on Sunday under the superintendency of Mr E. Bennett, with Miss Bell as assistant. Fourteen scholars were enrolled. M

WINCHMORE. At the fortnightly social the winners #f the prizes were Mrs S. Thompson, 'Mrs W. King, 'Mr J. J. O’Grady and Mr M. Verrall. For the dancing, music was played by Macdonald’s orchestra, with an extra/by Mr R. Lamb. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss G. Shearer and Mr N. Milsom. Mr G. Wright was master of ceremonies. An enjoyable social .was held in the hall in aid of the Winchmore stall at St. Stephen’s Church fair. The prizes were won by Mrs F. A. Scott, Mrs J. Shearer, Mr WL Boag and Mr Challis. Novelty dances were won by Miss M. Mac Kay, Mr Trotter, Miss R. Withell, and Mr Samuels. Music was played by Cook’s orchestra, with extras by Mr R, Gudsell. Mr J. Bland, jun., was master of ceremonies. PENDARVES. Members of the Wakanui, Rakaia and Chertsey Bible Classes were entertained by the Pendarves Class. Games were played and items were given by Misses Lorna Larnbie, I red a Ironside, and L. Grindlay. The leader (Mr M. Naismith) welcomed the visitors and took charge of the arrangements. Those speaking on behalf of the various classes were Mr R. Pluck, Mr J. West and Miss Mollie Blake. '• The fortnightly euchre add dance was held by the ball committee and tennis club. The results were as follow: —Mrs W. New burn 1, Miss Eva Doig 2; Mr A. J. Watson 1, Mr F. DIronside 2. Miss E. Malcolm the music, and Mr Percy Doig and Mr F. W. Ironside were masters of ceremonies. MONTALTO. There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Montalto Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, held at Mr W. S. Greeuslade’s residence on Thursday afternoon. The president (Mrs R. J. Anderson) occupied the chair. One new member was welcomed 1 . A demonstration on pastrymaking was given by Mrs G. B. v Murdoch, and Mrs H. Branch gave a talk on poultry. Both were accorded .a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follow: —Best bloom: Mrs G. B. Murdoch 1, Mrs J. McCormick 2, Miss B. Murdoch 3. _ Marble cake: Miss B. Anderson 1, Miss Jessie McCormick 2, Mrs Rex Gallagher 3. lib butter: Mrs R. J. Anderson 1, Miss L. Harris 2, Mrs Rex Gallagher 3. Plain article made from 1001 b flour bag: Miss.L. Harris 1, Mrs Rex Gallagher 2, Mrs J. McCormick 3. The competitions were judged by Mrs D. J. Morrow and Mrs G. R. Murdoch. The hostesses were Misses A. H. Woods and Islay McCormick.
