The Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C. (Chancellor of the New Zealand University), was a passenger for the south on the express train this morning.

Mr W. Bryant left by train this morning to attend a meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee at Dunedin.

Mr J. R. Wilkie was appointed drum-major of the Ashburton Silver Band at the practice of the band last evening. Mr Wilkie succeeds the late Mr W. R. Tucker in this office.

Dr. J. M. Laird ('New Zealand Secretary of the Scripture Union) is visiting Ashburton, and will address a Scripture Union meeting this evening. He will leave for Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr A. McMaster, of Christchurch (late conductor of the Grevmouth Civic Band), visited the Ashburton Silver Band’s bandroom during the practice last evening, and was welcomed by the conductor (Mr E. R. Hopwcod).

Lieutenant-Colonel C. Walls, M.C., of Wellington (Salvation Army Young People’s Secretary for New Zealand), who l concluded the Crusade of the Cross campaign in Ashburton last evening, left for Christchurch this morning.

On the eve of her marriage*. Miss B. Thompson was met by members of the staff of Messrs Buxton and Thomas and was made the recipient of a token of their regard. On behalf of the firm a cheque wias presented to Miss Thompson, to whom good wishes were extended.

The Rev. H. J. W. Knights, formerly vicar of Hokitika, was instituted as vicar of Rakaia by the Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie, on behalf of Bishop West-Watson, at Rakaia last evening. There was a good congregation, and other clergy present were the Revs. 0. L. Wilson (Southbridge), H. Watkins (Hororata), and T. Williams (Mount Somers). After the service Mr and. Mrs Knights were extended a welcome iby the parishioners. Prior to his departure from Hokitika, Mr Knights was met by members of the All Saints’ Young Men’s Club and presented with a pipe.
