THE TUCKER MEMORIAL.

There should be a ready. response by the public to the movement inaugurated by the Ashburton Silver Band for a suitable memorial to the late Brum-Major, Lieutenant W. R. Tuckei. The proposal is for the provision of seats in the Domain Rotunda for use when the' band performs there. The members of the Band, while doing their part, feel that the people generally would desire to show in tangible form their appreciation of the public spirit that actuated Mr Tucker throughout his life, in connection with many of the activities of the town, but more particularly in connection with the Band. By his active participation in band matters, Mr Tucker not only contributed greatly to providing residents with one of the most pleasurable amenities of the town, but also indirectly assisted in making Ashburton known in other parts of the Dominion to a degree that otherwise wouldl not have been the case. The provision of suitable accommodation for bandsmen is a particularly appropriate form of memorial, as it will assist an organisation the welfare of which can be truthfully described as having been nearest Mr Tucker’s heart. But his community service was conducted on such broad lines that many organisations owe him a debt of gratitude that mmht well find expression in practical support of the Band’s proposed memorial.
