MORE THAN GUIDE

“TOURING IN NEW ZEALAND.”

“The traveller who is going overseas and is hesitating what part of the globe to visit will not hesitate when he has looked into Dr. A. J. Harrop’s comprehensive guide to New Zealand. ‘Touring in New Zealand’ has been written to supply a veiy real need . . .

The author set to work to provide the sort of book he himself would liked to have had with him, andi whether we go to New Zealand or not, we cannot fail to relish his vivid descriptions and the interesting information he puts at our disposal.” These words by an English reviewer can be endorsed in this Dominion. Dr. Harrop, indeed, provides interesting reading even for one who knows his New Zealand fairly well, and as a guide for overseas visitors it cannot he too highly recommended. Dr. Harrop gives as a background many of the incidents in the picturesque history of the relations between Maori and white man. The book is in three parts—South Island, North Island and General. The tour of the South Island includes a description of the great new road from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound which will provide one of the most beautiful motor routes in the world. In the North Island section the treasures of the Auckland AVar Memorial Museum are incidentally described as well as the Alexander Turnbull Library, with its priceless manuscripts and unique Pacific collection, and the remarkable library of Mr F. W. Reed, of AA’hangarei, in which is housed the finest private collection in existence of the manuscripts and printed works of Alexandre Dumas. Considerable attention is given to the wonders of the thermal regions while the third part of the book gives specific information on a number of subjects of special interest to visitors. The 24 illustrations are photographic gems. George Allen and Unwin, Ltd., are the publishers, the review copy having been forwarded by AVhitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., through Mr Newton Jones.
