COUNTY CENTRES.

METHVEN. A football team from the Lyndhurst School visited Methven yesterday and played a team from the primary department of that school. The game was very even, and Avas enjoyed by a large number of parents and friends of the scholars. The scores were 3-nil in favour of Methven. Mr A. R.. Gourlay was referee. A basketball match Avas also played betAveen Lyndhurst and Methven schools, the game resulting in & win for Lyndhurst by 12 points to 5. Afterwards the local scholars entertained the visitors at afternoon tea. The Methven .branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held its first social and dance in the Methven Toavii Hall last evening. There Avas an attendance of about 100 couples, Avho danced to music by Cook’s orchestra. Extras were played by Miss Ida Bland and Mr W. H. Amos (Ashburton). Mr A. C. GaddtAvas master of ceremonies. A lucky spot waltz Avas won by Mr and Mrs E. A. Bland, and prizes for the first couple on the floor oyer a number of dances Avere Avon by Mr and Mrs W. J. Dolan. Mr R. W. Wightman briefly welcomed those present, and thanked all who had assisted to make the evening so enjoyable. He hoped that the branch avoulH make the function an annual one. Mr R. Oakley (president of the Mid-Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union) briefly referred to the advantages of having a united union of farmers, and appealed to those present Avho were not already members to join. He congratulated the Methven branch of> the Young Farmers’ Union on the progress it was making, and Avished the branch success. Mrs F. Johnson, of Seafield (president of the Mid-Can-terbury Executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union)' outlined the aims- of the division, which was formed only 10 years ago, but uoav had 400 branches and 14,000 members. She described a number of the activities of the division, and suggested that there was a great opportunity to form a branch at Methven. A number of vocal items were contributed by Miss Healey (Ashburton), Mr R .A. Oakley (Rakaia), and Mr O. J. SteAvart (Highbank). •[ .. .■ : In the absence of the president, Mrs J. F. Stone presided at the monthly meeting' of the Methven Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy Avith Mrs T. Ross in her illness Avas carried. Miss A. M. Grubb gave an address on various • composers, and illustrated if by numerous gramophone records. Mesdames J. Green and E. A. Bland played a duet. HINDS. A concert was held in the Hinds Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the Hockey Club’s fund. Members of the Hockey Club presented an entertaining programme, as folloAvs: —Opening chorus, members of the Hockey Club; recitation, Miss M. Reddecliffe; duet, Miss M. ‘Dell and Miss E. Proctor j song, Miss A. Barrett; one-act play, Misses M. Mcßae, N. Davidson, A. Chisnall and T. Chisnall; dance, Master K. Smith; one-act play, Misses M. Donaldson, 0. Davidson, J. Lowe, J. Davidson, M. Chisnall, M. Joiner, M. Grayburn and R. Donaldson; song, Miss M. Barrett; recitation, Miss M. Reddecliffe ; dance, Miss M. McGregor; song, Miss J. Sim and Miss F. Donaldson; duet, Miss M. Joiner and Miss M. Mcßae; scng. Master J. Abel; one-act play, Misses M. Lowe, A. Musson, W. LoAve, M. Watson, B. LoAve and A. Lowe. An enjoyable dance was held after the concert, the music being supplied by Morris’s band. An extra Avas ■played by Mr B. Claughton. A Monte eCarlo waltz Avas Avon by Mr D. Chapman and Miss J. Sim. There Avas a good Avith visitors from Ashnur- " ton arid' surrounding districts. Cards ; 'Were played till 10 o’clock, the prizewinners being Miss E. Galletly and Mr F. Aiken. Consolation prizes Avere awarded to Miss P. Tod and Mr F. Mabley. After supper a dance Avas held, to mtisic supplied by Messrs J. Whiting and A. Chambers, Avith extras by Mrs J. Addis and Mr F. Harrison. Mr H. Aiken Avas M.C. MAYFIELD The monthly meeting of the Mayfield branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the chuirch vestry. Mrs W. T. Elmslie presided. A missionary letter Avas received from Mrs G. Gray, of Jagadrhi (India). The subject for the afternoon Was “Other Missions as AA'ell as our own,” and Mrs W. S. Greenslade read • ••extracts from the “Christian Herald” ori the China Inland Mission. Afternoon tea Avas served. m rRAKAIA. A pleasant evening Avas spent in the Lodge Hall, Avhen members of the Rakaia Bowling Club entertained members of the Croquet Club. The evening Avas spent in playing euchre, and the winners Avere Mrs L. L. Street and Mr J. Wilson. The consolation prizes Avere awarded to Mrs Garrigan and Mr W. Oromie. The president (Mr C. Garrigan) presented the trophies won during the season to the successful bowlers. MARONAN. A very successful harp drive was -’held recently Avhen 331 hares and 15 , rabbits were secured. There Avere 29 guns out under the captaincy of Mr J. payidson.
